About us

Umoya Relief Foundation’s (URF) mission is to provide sustainable resources to assist underdeveloped and underserved communities in the Portland metropolitan area to their self-sufficiency. We are a grassroots, nonprofit, organization based in Oregon. URF was established to give a voice to indigenous Africans within the Portland Metro Area while connecting them to their roots in their countries. In a collaborative effort, our board of directors saw the need to promote diversity and equip the community with vital resources to thrive and embrace their diversity.

Our story

Umoya Relief Foundation driven by volunteers from the community. Due to limited access to funding, we have relied on volunteers and contracted workers to carry out our initiatives. Our clients often have significant psychosocial needs including, language/cultural barrier, mental health, addiction, homelessness, unsafe living situations, and poverty. Our volunteers and board members work collaboratively with the client to educate, coach, and support in connecting them with long-term resources based on their needs. Our board and volunteers are trained in strength-based and trauma-informed approaches.

URF promotes affordable housing, education, health, and family support. Services are promoted through community engagement on a variety of channels including outreach, WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger, and translated materials. These channels and URF’s existing relationship with the community will be leveraged to share culturally appropriate information about affordable houses, explain safety practices such as mask-wearing, and connect community members to health and testing services.
